The attention and the pride of the museum staff and volunteers really shows in this museum. Everything is neatly displayed, organized, and labeled. It rambles a bit so the map supplied is helpful. Exhibits include early pioneer items, Native American artifacts, rocks and fossils, and rooms arranged to represent some of the first businesses in Thermopolis. One cool display is the bar from the Hole-in-the-Wall Saloon which was a favorite hang out in Thermopolis for outlaws including Butch Cassidy and the “Wild Bunch".
Don't miss the buildings across the street in the fenced in lot. There's a school house, a one room house, a building with exhibits about the oil industry, an agricultural building, plus farming, ranching, and oil industry equipment outside on the grounds.
There are a few accessibility problems. The lower level is accessed by a long, dangerously steep ramp, the Old Town boardwalks have a high transition from the museum floor, and the Anderson Cabin has a Dutch door with only the top opened and the bottom half too high to see over from a seated position. Boardwalks access the buildings outside. They do not meet flush to the ground. The buildings have high thresholds and the school house has steps.
