Old Stone House Museum

The museum includes nine buildings that make up the complex of the Orleans County Grammar School and the Stone Boarding House. Alexander Twilight, a man of mixed race, became principal of the grammar school in 1829 and built the stone house a few years later for out of town students. Except for a short period from 1847-1852, when Twilight taught school in Canada, he was principal at the school until 1855 when a stroke forced him to retire.
Stop at the Twilight House first to see exhibits about the school, boarding house, and Alexander Twilight. This is also where tickets can be purchased for a guided tour. All four floors of The Stone House are filled with period items and historic information on Orleans County. Most of the other buildings have small exhibits or are not open to tour. A pamphlet for a walking tour can be printed or picked up at the museum.

This is a Harvest Hosts site - one of the most scenic and interesting that we've visited. The camping spot is in a meadow with beautiful views of farmland and rolling hills. It's also a reasonably priced Hipcamp site and one of the historic buildings is an Airbnb. All of the volunteers and employees are very welcoming and helpful.
The complex is not very accessible. Gravel has been used to build up the ground at the side entrance door of the Twilight house but there's still a high threshold. The Stone House has a gravel and grass path to a side entrance. The first floor is accessible. Paths to the other buildings are over uneven, grass covered ground. Museum  44.83589, -72.16588
