Back Cove Trail
We intended to walk/roll along the Eastern Promenade Trail but the parking spaces were all taken so we went a little inland to the Back Cove Trail which makes a complete loop around the Back Cove with views of downtown Portland and the tidewaters. It runs parallel to a road the entire distance so it a little noisy. A huge construction project was underway went we visited and a lot of the trail was pretty quiet because the road was closed. A 3.5 million gallon underground tank is being installed to catch storm runoff that now goes into the sewers and overflows into the cove and ocean - yuck! The trail is 3.6 miles long. It's hard packed gravel, level, and accessible with the exception of one hill where the trail follows alongside I-295 to cross the cove outlet. That section is steep with loose gravel and a rough spot at the interstate. We parked in the Little League Field parking lot in Edward Payson Park. The lot is large enough for any RV. A trail leads to the Back Cove Trail. Three sea creatures live in the field adjacent to the ball field. They're made from 10 tons of fishing equipment gathered from the Gulf of Maine during an ecological cleanup. Trail 43.68134, -70.26687Thus Article Back Cove Trail
