Stanley Museum
Merle Markle was a forest ranger in the Stanley Basin for 9 1/2 years in the 1930s. During that time he and his wife, Kathleen, built a telephone office/garage and a machine shop, and supervised the building of a barn, an ice house, and an oil house. They cut and peeled the logs to ready them for young men from the Civilian Conservation Corp who built a nine room home for the Markles.
The house is now a museum with exhibits on the CCC, the forest service, and local history. The ice house has more displays and antique equipment is located on the grounds.
The house has a ramp to the porch but there’s a short step up at the entry door. The interior of the house is accessible. The ice house is not accessible due to multiple steps. The equipment can be seen from the parking lot.The parking lot is small but RVs can be parked lengthwise if there’s room – if not the loop road at the museum makes exiting easy.
