Camping with the Cows
Route 228 crosses the Ruby Mountains, climbing to 7,300’ at Harrison Pass before ascending to the Ruby Valley on the east side of the mountain range. We were planning on checking out some of the boondocking spots on Forest Road 113 that travels alongside Toyn Creek but decided to continue over the pass in hopes of getting a useable internet signal. Shortly after the summit we found a lush, green meadow complete with a fire ring and plenty of level ground. It was obvious that cows used the meadow and a couple of bulls arrived that evening. The next morning we were surrounded by the whole herd. They grudgingly moved out of the way when we eased our way back onto the road. I guess that’s what we get for invading their pasture! :-P And we didn’t even have any internet signal. Next time we’ll stay on Forest Road 113.
Route 228 is paved to the summit after which it becomes a gravel road with rough washboard sections. It is not recommended for large RVs but except for the very rough conditions on the eastern section there’s really nothing that will cause problems for RVs. Forest 40.31467, -115.48645
