Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park
We almost missed this place! We spotted a few windmills from our parking space at Imagination Station and took a short walk to see if there were more.
Wow! These are all the creations of one man, Vollis Simpson, who assembled the sculptures on his family farm using discarded road signs, fans, stovepipes, I-beams, pipe, textile mill rollers, ball bearings, and other found materials. They spin and turn in all directions, men saw wood, play guitar, ride bicycles, horses trot and geese fly. As Simpson aged and his health declined plans were made to move the sculptures to a specially built park to save them from deterioration. From concept to completion took seven years and the park officially opened just a couple of weeks ago.
The park is accessible.
Parking is available on the street. Park 35.72205, -77.91267
