Maine - Mount Desert Island - Miscelaneous Ramblings
Somes Harbor is the most protected harbor on MDI. Combined with the friendly people in Somesville, the Somesville Landing Corportation which provides a floating dinghy dock, and a local family who has a stout storm mooring that is always available, the attraction encouraged the Last Dance crew to return on three trips to this beautiful spot.
The resident bald eagle in Somes Harbor must have greatly upset a family of terns. Two terns, so small in size to the eagle, chased the much larger bird around the harbor one afternoon.
The loons in Somes Harbor kept the crew entertained with their haunting calls. They are solitary birds, usually seen alone on the water. The males and females have the same plumage, rare among bird species.

The yacht club near Southwest Harbor operates a youth sailing program. The small sailboats add to the interest of the harbors. Boats powered only by sail have a great advantage in Maine waters. They do not have propellers under the boat to snag the prolific lobster bouys.
